Mobile money in Africa: what actually works for online payments

The minimum is the one actually enforced at the till. The USD column is that same amount at the rate we convert with, given for comparison only — you always pay in your own currency.
What we learned building it
MTN Mobile Money in Benin and MTN Mobile Money in Uganda are not the same integration. Same brand, same app for the customer, two separate connections on the merchant side. That is why a service can accept MTN in one country and not in its neighbour, and it is not an oversight.
A Kenyan pays in shillings, a Senegalese in CFA francs, and the operator converts nothing. Pricing in each currency is the merchant problem. A site showing only dollars almost certainly has no local integration, just a translated page.
Our floor was defined in CFA francs. An 85 ZMW deposit - about four dollars, comfortably over the real threshold - was compared against 2,500 and refused, because 85 and 85 are the same number and nothing alike. The floor has to be converted before it is compared, or every country outside the CFA zone is excluded with no useful error.
Seven countries in this table use the CFA franc, and each still has its own operator mix: Orange and Free in Senegal, MTN and Moov in Benin, Airtel alone in Gabon. A shared currency does not give you shared coverage.
Vodacom M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Orange Money all run there, and the local currency - the Congolese franc - carries the largest figures in the table. A price shown in dollars is particularly misleading in that market.

From the KamiVerify payment system. The table is generated each time the page loads, from the same catalogue the checkout reads, so it cannot advertise coverage that would be refused at the till. The minimums are the ones actually enforced.
