What is a virtual number, and how does it work?

A virtual number is a real phone number that is not tied to a SIM card in your phone. It lives with a provider, and the SMS sent to it is shown to you online - on a web page or in an app. People use one to receive a verification code for WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, TikTok, Google and hundreds of other apps without giving out their personal number. Most are rented for a single code; a few can be kept longer. That is the whole idea, and the rest of this page is the detail.

How it works

  1. You pick the app and the countryFor example WhatsApp, from the United States or from Cameroon. Each combination has its own price and its own stock.
  2. You are given a numberIt appears on the page with a countdown. You type it into the app that wants to verify you, exactly as shown, with the country code.
  3. The app sends its codeThe SMS arrives at the provider, not at your phone, and is displayed on the same page within seconds.
  4. You type the code into the appVerification is done. If no code arrives before the timer runs out, the order cancels and the money returns to your balance.

What people use it for

Virtual number or second SIM?

A second SIM card gives you a number you keep for years, but it needs a phone slot, ID registration in most African countries, and credit to keep it alive. A virtual number needs none of that: it works from any phone or computer and is ready in under a minute.

The trade-off is ownership. A rented number belongs to the provider, so anything that may ask for a new code months later - WhatsApp in particular - must be protected with a PIN or password the day you create it.

Is it legal?

Renting a phone number is ordinary and legal, and businesses have done it for decades. What matters is what the account is used for: fraud, impersonation and evading a ban stay unlawful or against the rules whatever kind of number is behind them.

Common questions

Is a virtual number a real number?

Yes. It is an ordinary phone number from a real country and a real network; the only difference is that no SIM card in your phone receives it. The app sending the code cannot see where the SMS ends up.

Can I receive calls on it?

Rental numbers are built for SMS codes. Some apps offer a voice call instead of an SMS - choose SMS when you are asked.

How long do I keep the number?

For one verification, unless the service says otherwise. If you need a number you keep, look at long-term options such as a US TextPlus number rather than a one-code rental.

Which country should I choose?

The one with stock and a good success rate for the app you want, not necessarily your own. The price and the live stock are shown for every country before you pay.

Try one

Pick the app, then the country. You see the price and the stock before you pay, and an order with no code refunds itself.
