How to get a Telegram code without your own phone number

Telegram requires a phone number to create an account, and there is no email-only option. But Telegram is unusual in that once the account exists, the number stops mattering day to day: you can set a username, hide the number from everyone, and be found and messaged without it. That makes registering on a rented number more practical here than on most platforms - as long as you set a cloud password before you close the app.

Step by step

1. Start the sign-up and stop at the numberOpen Telegram, choose Start Messaging, and get as far as the country picker before you rent anything. The code is short-lived.
2. Rent a number and enter itChoose Telegram as the service. Enter the number exactly as shown, country code included.
3. Read the code on the pageIt arrives on the same page. If Telegram sends a call instead of an SMS, wait for the SMS fallback rather than cancelling.
4. Set a cloud password before anything elseSettings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification. Without it, anyone who later rents the same number can take the account. With it, they cannot.
5. Set a username and hide the numberSettings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number, set to Nobody. Then pick a username. People can now find you at @yourname and never see a number at all.

Why the cloud password matters more here than anywhere else

Rented numbers are recycled. Somebody else will hold that number eventually, and Telegram logs in by number plus code - so without a password, they would be one code away from your account and every chat in it.

The cloud password closes that door completely. It is the single most important thing on this page, and it takes less than a minute.

What Telegram will and will not let you do

• Be found by username instead of number: yes, and it is the normal way people use Telegram.
• Hide your number from contacts who have it saved: yes, in Privacy settings.
• Change the number later without losing the account: yes, Settings, Phone Number.
• Register with no number at all: no. There is no such option.

If the code does not arrive

Telegram tries the cheapest route first, and that is not SMS. If a number has ever been used with Telegram on a device that is still signed in, the code goes there as an in-app message and no SMS is sent at all. On a freshly rented number that cannot happen, so an SMS should arrive within about thirty seconds.

When nothing comes, wait for the Resend code link rather than restarting the sign-up. Telegram slows down a number that is asked repeatedly, and starting over resets nothing. If the second attempt is also silent, cancel and take a number from a different country - some ranges are refused quietly rather than with an error.
